very late, but after many puff pieces I heard about those anime, my inner temptation was finally defeated and I watched it. And in overall i am glad id did so. The idea of the story is one of a kind and really unique - not a normal romantic school-time story thingy - nope. Soon the as fresh as a daisy heroine Haruhi will caught your heart away. And even Kyon with his always dry and funny sarcastic remarks, which he seldom dares to speak out loudly because he is afraid of the death penalty Haruhi often threatens her "minions" with.

Nope - I won't gonna tell here the story or something that would spoiler the plotline of this anime. Those who watched it already will understand, thsoe others won't - but maybe some of the later suggestions will be useful for them.

The reason I write here is to state my opinons in the many varies of episodic order this anime comes along. Yes, you heard correctly. The first publification of this anime in TV aired in a non-chronological order. It is therefore know as the "Kyon"-order. This order keeps the main plotline in correct order, but interupt it with not so important episodes. Those nonetheless funny and entertaining "filler" episodes can appear in a totally chronological disorder.

The chronological correct order is know as "Haruhi"-order and sticks tight to the light novels. Unfortunetaly, this order has his most fascinating part in the very middle of the anime, so it dies away rather unspectacular at the very end.

The original DVD-order keeps mostly to the "Haruhi"-order. But it puts the amateur movie at the very beginning, which is normally correctly placed right in front of the episode with the college festivity.

This is why I post the best order in my opinion for watching the first season alone - it is the "Haruhi"-order with a more exciting end representation:

01: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi I
02: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi II
03: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi III
04: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi IV
05: The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi
06: Mystérique Sign
07: Remote Island Syndrom (Part One)
08: Remote Island Syndrom (Part Two)
09: Asahina Mikuru's Adventure (Episode 00)
10: Live alive
11: The Day of Sagittarius
12: Someday in the Rain
13: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi V
14: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi VI

If you plan to look season 2, you should watch it in the chonological correct order, placing some of them in between some episodes from season 1. This is due to the fact some "filler" episodes were used from the later roman books for season 1. This order does not need to place a fascinating ending and therefore "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi V + VI" at the very end. Keep it in the correct order, the new and last episodes from season 2 are forming a more fitting end right afterwards.
So this order is the absolute correct chronological order for this anime due to both seasons:

01: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi I
02: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi II
03: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi III
04: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi IV
05: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi V
06: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi VI
07: The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi
08: Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody (New)
09: Mystérique Sign
10: Remote Island Syndrom (Part One)
11: Remote Island Syndrom (Part Two)
12: Endless Eight (New)
13: The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya 1 (New)
14: The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya 2 (New)
15: The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya 3 (New)
16: The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya 4 (New)
17: Asahina Mikuru's Adventure (Episode 00)
18: Live alive
19: The Day of Sagittarius
20: Someday in the Rain
21: The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya 1 (New)
22: The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya 2 (New)
23: The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya 3 (New)
24: The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya 4 (New)
25: The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya 5 (New)
26: Charmed at First Sight Lover (New)

If you already watched season 1 or 2 - or both - please let me know what your opinions were while
watching it and afterwards thinking about an own "right" order. Woudl you agree or not? Is the Kyon order the more fascinating one or do you like a strict chronological order more?

Trivia - Season 1:
The "Haruhi"-order and "Kyon"-order were named by the previews of the TV version in which Kyon and Haruhi presented the correct number for the next episode. Haruhi always showed the correct number, Kyon the false, but in fact the next, episode number.
An exception is episode 11. Both are showing the correct number making Kyon saying a false statement, which he has to correct right afterwards.

Trivia - Season 2:
The episode "Endless Eight" contains of 8 episodes with similar content and story, but same outcome at the end and was based on a very unique idea. Most fans disliked this kind of concept and so the director had to apologize for that later on.
